President's Update

The APICS Pacific Western District held the fall meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada over the weekend of November, 11th and 12th.  Recall that APICS-PS was selected as the Outstanding Chapter of the district last quarter, and was runner-up for Outstanding Chapter this quarter.  This is thanks to our Board of Directors, the great volunteer work completed by members and to our certification preparation classes.

The 2nd day of the conference offered three 1-hr overviews on how the mind works in learning and retention.  The first hour was dedicated to memory and methods to counter forgetfulness.  Some of the tools mentioned were the process of identifying patterns, and developing sequences.  By being able to identify a sequence, recall is much improved.  The technique of using the alphabet as a sequence and then correlating key words in a formula or a principle to the order within the alphabet is another key way to create recall.  The 2nd hour explained the concept of Mnemonics, which is the method of creating recall from a list or steps.  It was mentioned that research shows a 77% increase in test scores when mnemonics are used.  The third session focused on visual techniques, and focused upon the activities of writing concepts, principles, and key ideas on paper, as the act of writing creates a memory link to the brain.  Some concepts presented were creating similarities and differences, compare and contrast and summarizing and notetaking as effective techniques.  Again, statistics show that test taking success improves 34-45% by using these principles.

A reminder that APICS has a new Certification in Logistics, transportation and Distribution (CLTD) coming our way in January 2017.  Keep a lookout on this web page for new class offerings.
